Sergeant Hammon was a soldier of the 6th Armored Division of the US Army.
Biography[]
On August 20, he and his crew, consisted of T/2 Engineer Campbell, T/4 Medic Glenn and himself, were relieved from the 6th division and were to rendezvous with Lieutenant Mike Powell in the shelled-out ruins of Landenau in Brittany. The crew commandeered the King Tiger tank that was in the town for minor repairs, which they drove all the way to Brest to hold a crucial bridge.
